If you are like most people I know (and, since you’re studying this book, you most likely are-a minimum of on this respect), you use the online. Lots. In truth, in my own private case, the vast majority of my days are spent studying or scanning net pages-a scroll by way of my webmail consumer to speak with associates and colleagues, a weblog or two to catch up on the news of the day, a dozen brief articles, a flotilla of Google queries, and the constant flip to Wikipedia for a stray reality to answer a nagging query. All fine and good, of course; certainly, nigh indispensable. And but, it is sobering to assume that little over a decade in the past none of this existed. Email had its own specialised purposes, weblogs had yet to be invented, articles had been discovered on paper, Google was yet unborn, and Wikipedia not even a distant twinkle in Larry Sanger’s eye.
And so, it’s striking to think about-virtually shocking, actually-what the world may be like when our software turns to the net simply as frequently and casually as we do. Today, of course, we can see the faint, future glimmers of such a world. Instead of the “let’s just construct one thing that works” attitude that made the net (and the Internet) such a roaring success, they brought the formalizing mindset of mathematicians and the institutional structures of lecturers and defense contractors. They formed committees to type working teams to jot down drafts of ontologies that fastidiously listed (in 100-web page Word documents) all potential issues in the universe and the various properties they may have, and they spent hours in Talmudic debates over whether a washing machine was a kitchen appliance or a household cleaning gadget.
